Hieroglyphics Are Back

One example of a paradigm shift is the change to less and less words when communicating. As communication has become easier and the number of people that can be communicated with the number of words people use to communicate have decreased. First, incomplete sentences began becoming common and messages could be conveyed without filler words such as 'the' or 'a' and many more. Then entire phrases began to shorten to a bunch of letters such as ily or hmu. Then, as you can observe now, our society has moved back to hieroglyphics aka emojis. Messages can now be conveyed in a couple of emojis.

The most likely reason for this occurring is that as communication becomes easier and quicker, so does our language. Our communications must also speed up to keep up with our technology. Thus, as communications gets faster, our sentences evolve, or devolve depending on how you look at it, into simple pictures that takes barely any time at all to send and understand.

Another example of a paradigm shift is the desensitization to violence. Today, many people can view real explosions on television or online without flinching. This is a significant change. If you went back even 10 years and show the violence we see on a daily basis around of world and most would probably be sick to their stomach. It is almost scary how desensitized people have become to violence.

The reason for the paradigm shift is due to a significant advancement in technology. Today, people have access to news all over the world. Today more than ever, there is incredible qualities if information about any subject. This also means that all the violence around the world that is documented is also available for ordinary people in their living rooms. The news also covers many international stories instead of mainly sticking to local issues.

  1. With the recent release of The Emoji Movie, I think your first topic is undoubtedly relevant and real. You certainly will be able to find a lot of research on this topic since older people have been complaining about this new form of communication for about a decade now. Plus, people are always interested in seeing how language evolves so linguists are definitely studying and publishing. The second idea is also a great idea with a lot of research potential. I know its relevant because someone in my English class in 11th grade gave an impassioned speech about how video games are not actually desensitizing to violence. This to me suggests there is a large enough conversation and debate about desensitization that you will be find finding studies.

  2. Both of your topics are good and I am curious to see them be fleshed out. I think that the two topics go together and that no matter which one you choose you will be able to make a really good analysis of how it emerged and what role it plays in society. I think you should think about the effect of these on how we communicate and if it has negative effects for younger people.

  3. Both of these topics have potential! This is a general green light for either. I wish you the best with your decision!

  4. Along with the first topic that you present about using less and less words to communicate, you could also talk about how people's grammar has gotten progressively worse as time has gone on. People are relying more and more on spell check, and now the majority of our society doesn't know how to spell basic words. Be careful not to be too broad on this topic of using less words to communicate, but I think that focusing on a specific part of this work work out great for a TED Talk and essay.
